Access to a Clean Environment

Overview 
Environment and Climate Change We promote clean, healthy, and climate‑resilient environments by supporting waste management, climate‑smart livelihoods, clean energy solutions, environmental education, disaster risk reduction, and youth leadership in climate action.   GPF integrates environmental sustainability into its humanitarian response, recognizing the environmental stress that displacement places on host communities. Programmatic Areas: Afforestation and Reforestation: Tree planting campaigns in and around refugee settlements and degraded host community areas. Clean Energy Solutions: Promotion of energy-saving stoves at household and institutional levels to reduce deforestation. Environmental Education: Community-led awareness and youth mobilization on climate adaptation and natural resource management. Results: Planted over 30,000 trees across three districts as part of a reforestation initiative.

How we work?

1. Promoting Environmental Cleanliness and Waste Management
We support communities to maintain safe and hygienic surroundings through:
• Waste collection and community clean up initiatives
• Safe waste disposal and recycling practices
• Awareness campaigns on proper waste management
• Strengthening local waste management committees
Clean environments reduce disease, protect natural resources, and promote dignity.

2. Supporting Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)
We improve access to environmentally safe services by:
• Constructing latrines and handwashing facilities
• Promoting hygiene education in schools and communities
• Ensuring safe water drainage and waste water management
• Reducing open defecation through community led total sanitation
A clean environment goes hand in hand with good health.

3. Enhancing Green and Climate Friendly Practices
We promote sustainable environmental behaviours and solutions such as:
• Tree planting and community re greening projects
• Climate smart agriculture
• Energy efficient technologies like clean cookstoves
• Environmental education for children and youth
These actions restore ecosystems and build community resilience.

4. Protecting Children and Communities from Environmental Hazards
We help reduce exposure to harmful environmental conditions by:
• Identifying environmental risks in communities and schools
• Supporting disaster risk reduction and early warning activities
• Promoting safe, clean spaces for children to live, learn, and play
• Strengthening community preparedness for climate related events
A safe environment protects children’s health and development.

5. Strengthening Community and Local Leadership
We work closely with local leaders, structures, and government to sustain long term environmental improvements by:
• Training community environmental committees
• Supporting local authorities in environmental planning
• Facilitating community dialogue and accountability platforms
• Encouraging community-led environmental stewardship
